One of the first projects that Meghan Markle had plans to use to share her journey with the world has been canceled.
Streaming platform Netflix Inc has confirmed that they are no longer moving ahead with Markle’s animated series entitled Pearl.
Still, in the development stage, the show was created by Meghan Markle and Prince Harry‘s Archewell Productions.
The company was launched by the Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry in September 2020 after inking their massive deal with Netflix to create multiple projects, including scripted series, documentaries, movies, and children’s programming.
Meghan Markle was working with David Furnish on the series
It is believed that the streaming giant paid $100 million for the deal with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Pearl, which was supposed to be the first animated show from Archewell, was announced last year. The former actress was set to serve as creator and executive producer.
The husband to music legend Elton John, David Furnish, was lined up to be the series‘ executive producer.
Markle revealed that the series would follow the incredible adventures of a 12-year-old girl as she attempts to “overcome life’s daily challenges.”
Meghan Markle’s cartoon series Pearl was about her life
In a press release, Mrs. Markle revealed: “Like many girls her age, our heroine Pearl is on a journey of self-discovery as she tries to overcome life’s daily challenges. I’m thrilled that Archewell Productions, partnered with the powerhouse platform of Netflix and these incredible producers, will together bring you this new animated series, which celebrates extraordinary women throughout history. David Furnish and I have been eager to bring this special series to light, and I am delighted we are able to announce it today.”
Not much was known about the now-canceled series, but it was highly speculated that it was inspired by Mrs. Markle’s life story because she decided that the title of the show was based on her name.
According to the experts, the name Meghan or Megan originated in Wales but originally came from Margaret’s Greek name, meaning pearl.
Meghan Markle has drawn inspiration from her life for her first children’s book, The Bench.
Netflix Inc has confirmed that they are moving ahead with other projects tied to the royals, including the documentary series Heart of Invictus.
As of late, Netflix has announced a long list of cancellations due to a significant drop in subscribers.
Last week, the streamer announced that they had axed the kids’ animated series Dino Daycare and Boons and Curses.
Netflix has been re-evaluating its priorities, with reports claiming that many talented producers have recently been turned away as they focus on cutbacks and quality over quantity.
Piers Morgan reacts to the cancellation of Meghan Markle’s series
Piers Morgan was quick to address the news of cancellation in a fiery episode of his newly launched show Uncensored.
The former CNN host claimed that Prince Harry and his spouse have become too woke and have hurt their brand.
The 57-year-old TV presenter stated: “Now, I don’t believe in cancel culture – so I was obviously distraught to learn that the woman who canceled me has now herself been canceled. None of this brings me any pleasure, especially after the sad failure of her nauseatingly patronizing children’s book ‘The Bench’.”
Mr. Morgan added: “But it would be remiss of me not to just politely suggest that Meghan and Harry may be suddenly discovering that maybe the rest of the world isn’t quite as excited by their self-righteous brand of pious, hypocritical, money-grabbing, virtue-signaling royal bashing as they are.”
The former Good Morning Britain presenter concluded by: “Let’s face it – when the world’s wokest production company axes the world’s wokest project by the world’s wokest celebrity – that’s a whole new level of humiliation.”
Meghan Markle is focused on another project — her first podcast for Spotify
The world will be hearing from Mrs. Markle one way or another. She already has another project lined up, this time with Spotify, that will debut this summer.
Mrs. Markle will launch her podcast called Archetypes, which will be produced via her company Archewell Audio.
Prince Harry and Mrs. Markle inked a reported $25 million deal with the streaming platform.
The Duchess will speak to experts and historians about the origin of stereotypes that hold women back.
She said in a press release that the goal of the podcast is to “uncover the origin of these stereotypes and have uncensored conversations with women who know all too well how these typecasts shape narratives.”
Fans are hoping that it will be a success.
