A woman in New Mexico has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after throwing her newborn son into a dumpster.
18-year-old Alexis Avila from New Mexico admitted to throwing her baby into the dumpster on January 7 and told police that she was not even aware she was pregnant until the day before.
Teen mom Alexis Avila throws her baby into a dumpster in shocking video.
She was caught on surveillance footage and arrested and charged with child abuse and attempted murder.
Three people found the baby crying in the dumpster almost six hours after Avila tossed him in.
Michael Green, Hector Jesso, and April Meadow found the baby at around 8 p.m. on January 7, according to police.
They heard a baby crying and thought it might have been a kitten or puppy at first. When they found the newborn, the umbilical cord was still attached.
Meadow kept the baby warm until police and paramedics arrived and took him to the hospital, where he was put on oxygen and fed via a food tube.
He was given a blood transfusion and was suspected of having hypothermia after being left for several hours in 30-degree weather.
Acting Chief of Hobbs Police Department August Fons said he had never come across something like this before and urged anyone in a similar situation to seek help.
Fons explained: “If you are struggling with a new infant, the best response is to find somebody who can help you with that. Contact us, and let us help you through the situation.”
According to police, Avila had put the baby into a plastic bag with some other trash before throwing him into a dumpster near a shopping center in Hobbs.
Just two hours after being arrested, Avila was released on a $10,000 bond and will appear at Lea County District Court this week.
She had separated from the baby’s father in August 2021, Avila said, and did not even know she was pregnant until January 6, when she visited the doctor with stomach pains. The baby is in a stable condition, police said on Monday.
Oscar Astorga, the grandfather of baby Saul, says his family wants custody.
Oscar Astorga, 50, the father of Alexis Avila’s ex-boyfriend, Stephen Astorga, 16, says his family is trying to get custody of the child.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Astorga stated: “Of course, we’re trying to get custody. He is my grandson. That’s why we can’t comment on anything because we’re trying to get my grandson.”
The family was in shock after finding out about the baby that they decided to name Saul: “When you don’t know, and then all of a sudden someone calls you? It’s like wow. I’d like to tell you a lot of things. I’m a God-fearing man. I just can’t comment right now.”
He continued: “There’s a lot of people on social media that have been sending death threats to our family. We haven’t done anything wrong. My friend saw them. These people are on social media. We have nothing to hide, but we can’t comment right now.”
After the ex-couple split last year, Avila reportedly thought she had a miscarriage.
Alexis Avila’s mother, Martha Avila, defends her “mistakes.”
Alexis Avila’s mother, Martha Avila, is also speaking out and has defended her child. It has been revealed that a lawyer for the family will make a statement later today.
The mom said: “People can talk and give their opinion. Everybody makes mistakes. People can preach all they want, they can judge all they want, but we only care about the judgment of one.”
A classmate claims that the young woman knew she was pregnant, and it never seemed to be a problem for her.
The student stated: “I heard her talk about being pregnant around late September, early October. She never expressed that it was a bad thing that she was pregnant.”
People in Hobbs are still having a hard time understanding what happened.
