In a speech delivered at the National Dinner for the Human Rights Campaign, former Vice President Joe Biden expressed remorse over not having attacked President Donald Trump on his views earlier.
He explained that he and former President Barack Obama had made an agreement to stay relatively silent and avoid interfering with the work of the new administration for at least its first year of operation, but he now regrets this decision and wishes he had done otherwise.
Biden added that he could — and should — have shown more support for gay marriage at an earlier point in his career, instead of waiting for so long to open up about his actual views.
He added that he had waited for too long and he believed that it was already too late to make a real difference.
Mr. Biden seems particularly worried by some of the implications posed by the current Trump administration and has had his eye on those issues for a while — although it took him some time to properly open up about them and reasonably explain himself.
The tipping point was the way Trump handled Charlottesville last year, something which he saw as going over the line and made it unable for him to keep his mouth closed any further.
Some suspect that Trump might not leave this situation as it is either and may have a thing or two to say himself, but it remains to be seen if he is going to put himself in such a compromising position over these issues.
The Democratic politician is said to be eyeing a run for president in 2020. In early polls, he is leading the primary field and is one of most solid opponents for the sitting president.
In a party that is increasingly diverse and young, Biden is an interesting voice.
