A fan dies after a fall at Sports Authority Field, and the story has sparked many reactions. According to authorities, Jason Coy, 36, fell more than 60 feet at the Sports Authority Field at Mile High in Denver, Colorado.
On Monday, Coy, who attended the Broncos’ game against the Houston Texan, decided to sit on the stairwell railing on the north end of Sports Authority Field. It is not known why he was sitting in the dangerous spot, but some people say he might have been taking part in a dare or could have been intoxicated. Denver police say it is too soon to reach that conclusion. The tragic incident occurred between Gates 4 and 5.
Several 911 calls were made after the fan fell, and emergency responders quickly showed up to the scene. The man, who had suffered serious injuries, was rushed to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Denver Health Medical Center spokesperson Kelli Christensen confirmed the passing of Coy on Tuesday afternoon.
The Broncos released the following statement on the horrific incident:
“The Denver Broncos are extremely saddened to learn that Jason Coy, the fan who fell over a stairwell railing at Monday night’s game, has passed away. Along with Stadium Management Company, we extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to his family and friends. Providing a safe, enjoyable environment for guests at Sports Authority Field at Mile High is the top priority for the Broncos and SMC. We’re reviewing this tragic incident and will continue to maintain all necessary safety measures for our fans.”
The Denver Office of the Medical Examiner issued a statement on Tuesday, which explained that an autopsy completed earlier in the day, confirmed that “blunt force injuries” was the cause of death.
Denver police said they do not have more details about the accident at the moment and added that they are investigating the matter.
